Mason Menard (31-1, 23 KOs), a lightweight from Louisiana, scored a violent third round knockout on ShoBox: The New Generation last night. His opponent, Eudy Bernardo (21-1, 15 KOs), was four inches taller but never used his jab to control the distance. Menard’s exceptional footwork and hand speed kept Bernardo on the defensive and out of position to counter, which led to the brutal knockout punch.
The punch caused Bernardo’s five foot ten inch lanky frame topple over, resulting in a second blow suffered when his head bounced off the canvas. As he laid motionless, the referee immediately stopped the fight and doctors entered the ring to place him in a neck brace and on a stretcher.
Upon leaving the ring, Bernardo was semi-unconscious and his arms and legs were flaccid.
Results from his CT scan at Oneida Healthcare Center have not been made public.
