Andre Ward had to climb from the canvas and back into the fight after a second round knockdown caused by a straight right hand from Sergey Kovalev. Once he rose to his feet a smile cropped up on his face as if to say, “okay, you got me.” From that point on Ward boxed using a varied attack of sneaky jabs from the outside and body shots during clinches that slowed his opponent down in the second half of the fight. Kovalev was the sharper of the two out the gate but Ward became noticeably stronger and more precise as the fight progressed. Every round was close after the second and could have gone either way. In the end, Ward unanimously left with the belts but will have to fight Kovalev again due to a rematch clause in the contract and public demand.
