John Molina Jr. failed to make weight for his junior welterweight world title shot against unified champion Terence Crawford. Molina tipped the scale at 144lbs and attempted to lose the excess four pounds within the two-hour limit but was only able to drop down to 143.4. The fight will take place as scheduled but Crawford’s belts will no longer be on the line, plus, a major purse penalty will be levied. Crawford’s purse of $1.5 million will increase slightly now that Molina has agreed to an undisclosed five-figure payment from his $400,000 purse in order to proceed with the fight.
“I’ve never been over weight before,” Molina said. “I tried my best to get it off in the two-hour limit, but I couldn’t.” Molina is coming off a June 11 victory over Ruslan Provodnikov, and Crawford won his last bout in a unification fight against Victor Postol on July 23.
