Willie Monroe Jr. is Patiently Working

The last time Willie Monroe Jr. was in the ring, he won a unanimous decision over Gabe Rosado and the WBO Inter-Continental middleweight title. The winner of that fight was supposed to get a fight with Canelo, but shortly after the decision was announced, Canelo’s camp backtracked and decided not to fight Monroe. Now that Canelo has moved on, Monroe has to find his next move, and he’s been “patiently working” in the process.

WHEN I SPOKE WITH YOU LAST YEAR YOUR MANAGER, WHO WAS STEALING FROM YOU, WAS TRYING TO SUE YOU. HAVE YOU BEEN ABLE TO WIPE YOUR HANDS CLEAN OF THAT SITUATION?

Yeah, I’m clear of that. Brand new management team and everything.

WHO IS YOUR MANAGER NOW?

I have a strategic partner, his name is Adrian Clark, with AC Sports Management. He’s my strategic partner. My whole management team consists of him, my brother, Trent Monroe, and my head trainer, Timothy Nolan, better known as TJ.

THE LAST TIME WE SAW YOU IN THE RING WAS AGAINST GABE ROSADO. YOU WON CONVINCINGLY ON TWO OF THE THREE JUDGES SCORECARDS. WAS THAT A DIFFICULT FIGHT FOR YOU OR DID IT JUST LOOK PRETTY EASY?

I won convincingly on all three judges scorecards. One judge had it 8-4, one judge had it 9-3 and another judge had it 10-2.

THAT’S TRUE, YOU’RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT. WOULD YOU SAY IT WAS AN EASY FIGHT? IT APPEARED THAT WAY ON TV.

It was pretty easy, once I established my jab. The thing is, guys say, ‘he only has six knockouts, he has no power,’ but when I touch them they think twice about coming in. But it actually works for me because the less power they think I have, the easier it is for me to get fights.

THERE WAS A LOT OF BACK AND FORTH ON TWITTER BEFORE THE FIGHT BETWEEN YOU AND GABE, YOU GUYS WERE BOTH TAKING SHOTS AT EACH OTHER. IS THAT WATER UNDER THE BRIDGE NOW?

I haven’t heard from him. I tried to have good sportsmanship after the fight. I’ve never been a guy that takes things very personally, it’s a business. He didn’t have much to say. Neither did Fernando Vargas or some other people on his team that I knew . . . not that I was necessarily cool with, but I knew, and nobody really had anything to say. I tried to be nice to him but nobody really had anything to say.

THE ROSADO FIGHT WAS IN SEPTEMBER, WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN UP TO SINCE THEN OUTSIDE OF THE RING?

I moved into a new place. I spend a lot of time with my family . . . my son and my daughter. We were told that if we beat Rosado that we would get Canelo. Obviously that didn’t happen so I’ve just been spending as much time with my family as possible.

DO YOU HAVE ANYTHING LINED UP FOR 2017 YET?

No future dates . . . you know how this whole boxing thing goes, it depends what side of the fence you’re on. I put the one kids name out there who’s undefeated, Sulecki, he’s 23-0. That would be a good fight for me, but, I haven’t heard anything from that. Of course, he’s with the Al Haymon so I would have to be on that side of the fence before I get that type of fight. I don’t know, I’ve been trying but I haven’t heard anything. I’ve been using my social media to try to see who will fight me, but I don’t know, it’s weird.

ARE THERE ANY GUYS OUT THERE THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO FIGHT AT 160?

Absolutely. That kid Khytrov . . . he just lost but we tried to get him and Khurtsidze, and both of their teams turned us down. Not once, but twice. They’re in the top ten with me also with the WBC and the WBO. We tried to get them in the ring twice, but both of them said no. I’m not the type to sit up here and try to find someone easy, I’m looking for tough fights and fights that make sense. I’ve been trying to get Billy Joe Saunders to answer and he doesn’t answer, it’s been weird for me. But those are some of the names. Anybody in the top ten in any of those sanctioning bodies. I’ll go over to Britain to fight Billy Joe Saunders.

I’m patiently working . . . never patiently waiting always patiently working.

DANNY JACOBS IS FIGHTING GGG IN MARCH, HOW DO YOU SEE THAT FIGHT PLAYING OUT?

I really have no prediction for that fight, I just hope it’s a good one. You have two champions, two top middleweights, and it’s gonna be a good fight. I hope it’s gonna be a good fight. But I really have no predictions for it. Jacobs is a former USA National teammate of mine that I’ve known him since we were about 13 or 14. He’s a very good fighter. I fought GGG and he’s a good fighter. So, I just hope to see a good fight between two top champions.

YOUR NAME WAS BEING MENTIONED AS A POTENTIAL OPPONENT FOR CANELO LAST YEAR BUT THE FIGHT HASN’T MATERIALIZED YET, ANY CHANCE YOU GET THAT FIGHT LATER THIS YEAR?

From what we heard in his last fight he hurt his hand. He was supposed to fight, come back, and fight a return fight in December. We were sent a contract with numbers . . . and they said if you beat Rosado, you get Canelo in December. They said you get that jackpot all these guys are waiting for. I said, ‘oh cool.’ Then his team actually went on paper right after the fight and said we would never fight Monroe, which is kind of weird to put me in a contract and say that if I won I’ll get it and then when I won say, ‘you guys never had any chance of fighting me.’ Why would you even give me a contract to fight? I think they saw that my style is pretty much kryptonite for someone like Canelo. They have bigger fish to fry so why take a chance on Willie Monroe. I understand that in their mind it’s high risk, low reward. Golden Boy is cool but Canelo’s team didn’t have to go on with the insults. We did get a contract to fight you guys so don’t see that it could be a tough fight and then start with the insults. The casual fans, they believe whatever the superstar fighter says. His team was like, ‘we would never let the fight happen, he moves too much. We would never fight Monroe, we might as well fight Lara.’ What they meant to say is, ‘what we saw tonight in Willie Monroe can pose a lot of problems for our fighter and that’s not a chance we want to take at this point.’

AT THIS POINT, YOU’RE JUST PRETTY MUCH WAITING FOR A CALL?

I’m patiently working is what I like to say. Never patiently waiting always patiently working. Everybody thought I was done after the Golovkin fight. That was my 21st professional fight and I don’t have any wear and tear so I don’t know how they could possibly think that I was done. Then these last two fights showed I barely gotten started. This boxing game can be really bad at times, especially for someone who puts their all into it. There’s a lot of greed . . . and selfishness in the sport. There’s enough fights, there is enough money, enough network time to go around for everyone to be happy, but that just seems too right.

THAT’S SO TRUE. WELL, WILLIE, I WISH YOU THE BEST FOR 2017 AND I HOPE YOU GET THAT BIG FIGHT YOU’RE LOOKING TO LAND.

Thank you, man. I really hope so too. That’s all I need is an opportunity. I’m not out here trying to hand pick any opponents or look for easy fights. I just want an opportunity and I want a fair shake, which are very few and far between in the boxing world.
