Kell Brook won the IBF world welterweight title when he came to the US from his native England and defeated Shawn Porter August 16, 2014. Since then he’s successfully defended his title three times and is now set to face one of the most avoided men at 147lbs, Errol Spence.
This shouldn’t come as a surprise.
Brook is a man who survived a machete attack that left a gash in his thigh so big it required 32 staples to keep it closed. The nightmare encounter was September 4, 2014, just weeks after the Porter fight. He was back in the ring making the first defense of his newly obtained IBF title seven months later. The last person to bounce back from a leg wound that quickly was Ricky Bobby in Talladega Nights. Not to mention he went up two weight classes last year and suffered a tough round five TKO loss to middleweight boogeyman, GGG, which left him with a broken eye socket.
Now Brook is verbally committed to a fight against another boogeyman, but of the lesser known variety. Spence is Brook’s mandatory and if he doesn’t fight him, he will be stripped of his IBF title. Nobody fights Spence unless they have to, and Brook has to because he craves a challenge.
It’s official, Spence is on notice!
